Props to this couple for not being afraid to try something different. Traditional weddings can be a bit dull.

Never Apologize for Being Happy

Posted in Happiness on June 26, 2009 by Veronica

I finally finished Eat, Pray, Love by Liz Gilbert, and if you haven’t read it, go get it NOW. It’s fun to follow her on her trip to Italy, India and Indonesia. The author was quoted in another book I enjoyed, Happy for No Reason. The quote was in response to a reporter questioning if her jaunt around the world “looking for herself” was a selfish act. Her response was this:

You know what? I actually think it would have been a little selfish to spend the rest of my life in narcissistic, depressive, anxious misery. That person adds nothing to society, adds nothing to  any room she enters, adds nothing to the people whom she touches. The best community service I can possibly offer the world is to stay healthy and sane.

I love that and was not surprised to hear it came out of her mouth. She faced that reporter with the same non-apologetic, confident attitude she faced when traveling solo; as well as in the writing of her book. She did not feel that her journey needed justification, only that it was the best thing for her personal growth that resulted in her being a better person.

Do not allow others to impede on your search for happiness, and make sure you never impede on another’s. It may not take traveling around the world, but find what it is that makes you happy.

When you you’re happy, trust me, those around you will be happier. When you come into the office in the morning and you come in smiling and cheerful – you’re co-workers will be happier. When you get home from work and you’re in a good mood – your roommate, spouse, and/or children will in turn be relieved. You’re dog will even have a spring in his step.

So I guess I’m not quite sure how anyone can call that selfish.

Hello and welcome to The Principles of Pleasure! This is one of the first of what I hope to be many postings on how to help all of us become experts in the ways of pleasure. I do not claim to be an expert in the area, I just want to bring more of it into my own life, especially in the current state of things, and hopefully share with others.

We have been socialized to almost believe that giving to ourselves, to self-love, or to pamper ourselves is somehow selfish. What we can learn is that to seek pleasure for ourselves will make us a better spouse, parent, friend, employee, and an all-around better person. We can also learn that by bringing this philosophy into our own lives, we then bring it into the lives of those around us.

We all want to be healthy and live long, fulfilling lives. There is a way to achieve both. Healthy doesn’t have to mean boring. Feel free to send me any suggestions or tips you implement in your life.

Thanks for reading!
